Substack Raises $100 Million and Hits Unicorn Status at a $1.1 Billion Valuation

ubstack is a subscription publishing platform that empowers writers to build their audiences, earn independently, and publish on their terms. What started as a home for newsletters has grown into a new kind of social network—connecting writers and readers through long-form content, community, and direct engagement. The platform offers a comprehensive suite of subscription-based publishing tools, including intuitive editing, built-in payment processing, and advanced audience discovery features.

The company has raised $100 million in a Series C round led by Bond and The Chernin Group (TCG), with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Rich Paul (CEO and founder of Klutch Sports Group), and Jens Grede (CEO and co-founder of Skims), officially reaching unicorn status at a $1.1 billion valuation.

Substack, headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States, was founded in 2017 by Chris Best, Hamish McKenzie, and Jairaj Sethi. The platform now supports hundreds of thousands of writers across diverse genres and geographies. In March, the company announced it had surpassed 5 million paid subscriptions, more than doubling from 2 million in 2023. With the new funding, Substack aims to scale content discovery, enhance monetization tools, and further its mission to build a creator-first ecosystem—where quality writing thrives outside the constraints of traditional ad-driven algorithms.
